Recruitment for NCGC Automation Engineers
Department of Health and Human Services
National Institutes of Health
National Human Genome Research Institute

The NIH Chemical Genomics Center (NCGC) is a new facility within the National Human Genome Research Institute that will use the tools of small molecule discovery to develop chemical probes for the study of protein and cell functions. The Center will perform automated high-throughput screening (HTS) on biological assays submitted by the biomedical research community and carry out chemistry optimization on confirmed hits to produce chemical probes.

We are seeking highly motivated engineers to join the NCGC to develop, integrate, and maintain laboratory automation systems that implement critical-path workflows for high-throughput processes. The collaborative and fast-paced environment of the NCGC will require self motivated individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate must be hands-on and eager to perform duties in addition to automation projects, such as informatics infrastructure, troubleshooting, and maintenance of instrumentation.

Candidates will perform the following duties:

  • Operate and maintain robotic systems and instruments for high throughput screening
  • Perform routine testing and calibration of robots and instrumentation
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot articulated robotic arms, scheduling systems, and liquid handling systems (e.g. Kalypsys, Tecan, Aurora Discovery, CyBio)
  • Interact with scientists to aid HTS and molecular probe development
Requirements:
  • BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Team oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Meticulous lab technique and recording, excellent computer skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with computer aided engineering design tools, laboratory instrument control programming (e.g. Visual Basic, C/C++, LabView), and relational databases (e.g. Oracle, SQL/PLSQL.) is a plus.
Interested applicants should send curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation to our NCGC mailbox at NCGC@mail.nih.gov.

Applicants who cannot submit their materials electronically should submit their applications to:
