Recruitment for NCGC Research Informatics Scientists

National Human Genome Research Institute

The NIH Chemical Genomics Center (NCGC) is a new facility within the National Human Genome Research Institute and is the first in a network of screening centers being developed as part of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research (see NIH Gears Up for Chemical Genomics, Science, June 18, 2004 and Molecular Libraries Screening Centers Network ). The NCGC will use the tools of small molecule screening and discovery to develop chemical probes for use in the study of protein and cell functions, and biological processes relevant to physiology and disease. The Center will perform automated high-throughput screening (HTS) on biological assays submitted by the biomedical research community, carry out chemistry optimization on confirmed hits to produce chemical probes, and disseminate the data and probes via PubChem, a new division of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The NCGC Informatics Division will create and operate a state-of-the-art informatics support and research platform, and apply these tools to the discovery and characterization of the chemical probes. The data intensive nature of the effort will require an informatics group capable of handling large volumes of data obtained from production screening, as well as addressing the needs of individual researchers in the analysis of data from all stages of assay optimization and probe discovery. In addition, the group will coordinate data storage and mining with NCBI and the informatics groups of the other screening centers.

We are seeking highly qualified candidates to join the NCGC Informatics Division in three areas: IS/IT, screening informatics (screening data processing, collection, and analysis), and research computational chemistry. The NCGC will be a unique and exciting environment employing technologies on the cutting edge of small molecule screening and chemical genomics.

Candidates will perform one or more of the following duties:

  • Design, build and maintain a robust and flexible informatics infrastructure to support data collection from automated high-throughput screens
  • Build and maintain databases for chemical compound registration, tracking, and management
  • Design, maintain, and integrate LIMS
  • Work with biologists and chemists in the Center to analyze data from assays and screens
  • Perform virtual screening and molecular modeling
  • Analyze data across assays and screening centers, including larger data sets in PubChem
Requirements:
  • BA/BS, MS, PhD, or equivalent degree
  • Informatics experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, specifically in the management of databases and automated HTS systems a plus
  • Extensive experience with one or more programming languages
  • Highly motivated, able to wear many hats, and comfortable seeking solutions to unanticipated problems
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn on the job and openness to new ideas and solutions
  • Must take hands-on approach in meeting informatics/IT needs
  • Strong skills in database design
  • Willing to be a leader in developing new informatics solutions for novel data types
Interested applicants should send a resume and three letters of recommendation through our online application system .

Applicants who cannot submit their materials electronically should submit their applications to:

    NIH Chemical Genomics Center
    National Human Genome Research Institute
    50 South Drive
    Building 50, Room 5345
    Bethesda, MD 20892-8004
    NCGC@mail.nih.gov
Applications will be reviewed beginning September 1, 2004 and continue until positions are filled.
