The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Chemical Genomics Center (NCGC) is a new facility within the National Human Genome Research Institute and is the first in a network of screening centers being developed as part of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research (NIH Molecular Libraries Initiative [sciencemag.org]) The NCGC will use small molecule screening and discovery to develop chemical probes as research tools in the study of molecular processes relevant to physiology and disease. The Center will perform automated high-throughput screening (HTS) on biological assays submitted by the biomedical research community, carry out chemistry optimization on confirmed hits to produce chemical probes, and disseminate the data and probes via PubChem, a new division of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

We are seeking highly qualified chemists to join the NCGC Chemistry Division to devise and implement methodology for rapid analog synthesis and purification. In addition to a solid background in synthetic organic chemistry, expertise in high throughput parallel synthesis and analytical chemistry is required. Medicinal chemistry experience in industry or academics is a plus. The highly collaborative and fast-paced environment of the NCGC will require highly motivated individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The NCGC will be a unique and exciting environment employing technologies on the cutting edge of small molecule screening and chemical genomics.

Candidates with the B.A./B.S., M.S., Ph.D., or equivalent degree will be considered. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications. The positions include an ongoing commitment of research support and space.

Interested applicants should send a resume and three letters of recommendation to NCGC@mail.nih.gov.

Applicants who cannot submit their materials electronically should submit their applications to:

    Search Chair
    NIH Chemical Genomics Center
    9800 Medical Center Drive
    Bethesda, MD 20892-8004
    NCGC@mail.nih.gov
Applications will be reviewed beginning January 1, 2005 and continue until positions are filled.
